NSEB to INBO to IBO: selection explained

Follow the Biology Olympiad selection pathway, group rules, INBO selection and the OCSC stage.

Updated 20 October 2026

The five-stage route

  1. NSEB: the first-stage examination.
  2. INBO: the Indian National Biology Olympiad for selected candidates.
  3. Biology OCSC: the orientation-cum-selection camp.
  4. Team training: preparation for international participation.
  5. IBO: the International Biology Olympiad.

Two school groups

For selection, Group A is Class XII and Group B is Classes X/XI, with class considered as of 30 November 2026. Both groups take the same paper and syllabus. The programme targets 200 INBO candidates per group, subject to its full selection provisions.

Scores are only part of the rules

MAS and MI are calculated separately for the groups. The merit clause, state/UT representation, minimum numbers, ties and female supernumerary provisions need to be read together. Understand MAS and MI here.

Beyond INBO

The Biology OCSC target is 20 students per group, subject to the stated tie rules. Four students are selected for the IBO team from combined OCSC performance. HBCSE’s brochure lists IBO 2027 in Poland in July; consult later official notices for exact arrangements.

Qualification is confirmed by the official list, not by a website calculator or a coaching prediction.
